Septic Tank Upgrade Grants: Up to €12,000

Eligible homeowners may receive assistance for remedial work to a defective domestic wastewater treatment system. The grant can cover up to 85% of approved costs, capped at €12,000. It is administered by your local authority and is not an automatic payment for every faulty tank.

Three Routes to an Application

  • National Inspection Plan: a qualifying local authority inspection and advisory notice requiring remedial works.
  • High Status Objective Catchment Areas: qualifying systems in designated areas that threaten, or may threaten, the environment.
  • Prioritised Areas for Action: qualifying systems identified through the Local Authority Waters Programme, with the required eligibility letter.

Your council must confirm the route and conditions for your home. A private engineer’s report, a failing tank or an address in a county guide does not establish eligibility by itself. The former pre-2013 registration deadline was removed; this does not remove the obligation to register a system or the other scheme conditions.

What Is Excluded?

Routine maintenance, servicing and desludging do not qualify. The grant relates to approved remediation, repairs, upgrades or replacement. You remain responsible for costs outside the approved grant.

Check With Your Council Before Starting

Ask your local authority’s Rural Water section which scheme applies, what approval is needed before works begin, and what documents, contractor tax details and receipts are required. Obtain written confirmation of your position before relying on funding.
